Course Description

This course caters for migrant, Pasifika and International 2nd language learners (ELLs) in Years 11-12

The aim of the course is to develop academic vocabulary and competency in English skills across listening, speaking, reading and writing. The course is multi-level with assessments that provide credits towards NCEA Level 2, and targets the learning needs of individual learners. It also enables learners to be successful in  mainstream subjects and prepares them for L1 Literacy, and UE Literacy in 2025.

The EL classroom is a positive, nurturing environment which values and embraces the languages and cultures of the learners. Learners are encouraged to share their cultures and  support each other in their learning. Their cultures are an integral focus in the course for discussions, writing and presentation topics.

Term 1
Developing writing skills and writing a recount about ASB Polyfest

Polyfest trip

Term 2
Developing oral communication skills, focusing on active listening and speaking.

Matariki theme and international food market

Term 3
Developing reading skills and strategies that can be applied in mainstream subjects.

Developing oral confidence with a focus on presenting.

Term 4
Developing study skills and completing internal assessment.

Recommended Prior Learning

Learners from L1 and JUNEL01 will be recommended to choose this course by the HOD EL.

Pathway

This course prepares learners for L3 English Language which provides credits towards NCEA Level 3.
In Level 3, able learners can take L4 EAP Reading and Writing which will give them UE Literacy.
Learners can also prepare for L1 Literacy.
