Year 8 Mathematics

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs C. Taylor.

This is the course that further develops the skills studied at Year 7. Learners are taught by specialist Mathematics teachers and learners are introduced to  using calculators to answer some problems. Much of the focus in this year’s work is from Level 4 of the NZ Mathematics Curriculum.  Course work  will include: 

  • Number skills including multiplication, division,addition, subtraction, integers, powers and prime numbers 
  • Measurement skills including perimeter, area andvolume 
  • Further Number skills including fractions, decimals,percentages and GST 
  • Geometry covering angle rules, nets, and transformations 
  • Algebra skills covering simplifying, expanding,factorising and solving 
  • Statistics including calculating averages, analysinggraphs and reviewing different ways of representing data 
  • Financial literacy developing an understanding ofincome tax, loans, interest and budgeting

Course Costs and Equipment (this cost is only indicative)

$30 for a MathsBuddy subscription and associated costs. Learners should have a scientific calculator (Casio FX82AU plus II or equivalent)
