Textiles – Create with Purpose (Full Year Course – Achievement Standards)

This course is perfect for learners who want to combine their creativity, academic thinking, and practical skills through hands-on textile design. You will take part in a mix of theory and workshop sessions, learning how to take an idea from concept to final outcome.

You will explore textile design through meaningful projects that promote manaakitanga (care and respect for others) and develop products that have a real purpose for real people.

What Will You Learn?

Textile Design Skills

  • Learn how to read and interpret pattern instructions

  • Choose and adapt a simple pattern to suit your ideas

  • Develop confidence using a sewing machine and overlocker

  • Use materials in new ways to create innovative outcomes

Project 1: Dress a Girl/Boy Around the World

  • Learn about this global initiative and how it reflects manaakitanga

  • Research the needs of young girls/boys in less fortunate countries

  • Design and construct a garment for a child, using your skills to make a positive difference

  • Reflect on your choices and how your design meets the needs of the brief

Project 2: Innovation Through Experimentation

  • Experiment with different fabrics, textures, and techniques

  • Test and trial your design ideas to improve your final outcome

  • Design and construct a unique product such as a quilt, cushion, hoodie, or bag

  • Create for a client or purpose, showing creativity and problem-solving
