Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

Learners are tested on arrival at the college. The HOD EL recommends  learners who would benefit from choosing this course. It is not available to learners for whom English is the first language.


Level 1 English Language caters for migrant, Pasifika and International 2nd language learners (ELLs) in Year 11. The aim of the course is to develop academic vocabulary and competency in English skills across listening, speaking, reading and writing. The course is multi-level with assessments that provide credits towards NCEA Level 1, and supports learners for L1 Literacy, recognizing the learning needs of individual learners.

The EL classroom is a caring, nurturing and positive learning environment, in which learners' languages and cultures are valued. Learners are encouraged to share their cultures and support each other in their learning. 


Course Overview

Term 1
Diagnostic testing and ELLP(English Language Learning Progressions) testing across all strands: listening, speaking, reading and writing at the start of the term. This data informs the learner focused programme to cater for diverse levels of English Language acquisition.
Polyfestival theme
Preparation for the Reading and Writing Co-requisite exams

Term 2
Reading and writing focus, including the development of vocabulary.
ELLP testing at the end of the term to gauge progress and gaps

Matariki theme and World Ocean Day.

Term 3
Communication focus as a basis for developing literacy skills and oral confidence.

Preparation for the Reading and Writing Co-requisite exams.

Term 4
Focus on study skills and completing internal assessments.

Assessment Information

Learners will complete 4 Internal Assessments and can achieve up to 20 Level 1 NCEA credits.
