Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

11 MUS  or with approval from HOD Music.  

Having lessons on an instrument or in voice -  three years experience and to be at the fourth year on an instrument.

It is strongly encouraged that L2 music students have itinerant or individual private music lessons to support them with their performance credits.

Learners are also encouraged  to participate in the school’s extra-curricular music programme, which could also gain them credits towards their group performance standard.


L2 Music Course Description 

Prerequisites and Corequisites:     

  • At least 3 years previous experience and lessons on an instrument or voice.
  • It is highly recommended that all students have either itinerant or private instrumental or vocal lessons to support them with their performance assessments so they can be at the 
  • Required 4th year of performance by the end of the year and highly recommended to be a part of an extracurricular music group.

This course is designed for musicians with previous experience in performance music and are at a fourth year level on an instrument or voice. 

It is an advantage if you can read music but not necessary as you can gain credits from performance, songwriting and writing an essay on NZ Music.

L2 Performance Standards

  • There are both solo and group performance standards – those taking these standards need to choose two solo pieces and one piece to perform as a group. It is also possible to perform on a second solo instrument. 
  • It is highly recommended that those enrolled in these performance standards have one-on-one instrumental/singing lessons, either privately or through the school itinerant system. 
  • It is also highly recommended that students participate in one or more of the college's extra-curricular music groups, and for some of the music competition groups, students can obtain four credits for the Level 2 Group performance Achievement standard.  

Students can Compose two pieces of music and/or create an Instrumentation using the computer notation programme Sibelius.

Students continue to develop their music theory in preparation for the external exams. ( optional standard : aural skills) 

Students  can Investigate an aspect of New Zealand music and there are literacy credits available for this standard.

Endorsement Certificates

Merit Endorsement: 14 credits at Merit or Excellence level with at least 3 external credits. 

Excellence Endorsement:14 credits at Merit or Excellence level with at least 3 external credits.
