Recommended Prior Learning

It is highly recommended that learners are able sketch and draw confidently, or confidently use digital programs, to clearly communicate their ideas to an audience and be successful in DVC.


Level 3 Design and Visual Communication (DVC) - (Full Year Course – University Approved)

Course Overview  Design | Think | Communicate | Create 

Level 3 DVC is all about using visual thinking and creativity to solve real-world design problems. You’ll explore and develop your ideas for either Spatial Design (like architecture or interiors) or Product Design (like furniture or everyday objects).

Through sketches, drawings, 3D modelling, and digital tools, you will bring your ideas to life and clearly communicate your design thinking. You’ll consider human and environmental factors, and present your final design in a professional exhibition.

This course is ideal for students thinking about further study in architecture, design, engineering, or creative industries.

What Will You Do?

Solve Real Design Problems

  • Choose to work on either a Spatial Design (e.g. a building or room layout) or a Product Design (e.g. a functional item)

  • Respond to a brief and explore ideas through design research and creative thinking

  • Understand your design context, including cultural, environmental, and user needs

Use Visual Communication Tools

  • Communicate your thinking with:

    • Freehand sketches and design drawings

    • Annotations to explain your ideas

    • 3D modelling techniques (manual or digital)

    • Computer-generated images using design software

Exhibit Your Work

  • Develop a final presentation of your design to a high standard

  • Share your work in a peer exhibition to show your creativity and thinking

  • Build a portfolio that can support entry into tertiary design and architecture courses
