Year 9 Music (Band)

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms S. Shone.

A Practical band class

Learners will :  Learn how to play an instrument and read music as part of a class concert band program.

Learners will attend band class three periods each week for two terms (20 weeks).

There is a cost of $150 for this course as this covers the cost of instrument hire for the year (from the school), as well as the weekly 30 min lesson with a specialist teacher in addition to the three classes a week. Each learner will also get their own copy of Essential Elements - Band Programme - that will provide music for their course.

If the school does not have enough instruments for hire, some learners will have to hire from KBB or ABI and therefore the cost of the course will be reduced. Advice will be given at the start of the course.

During these Year 9 music lessons the students will work through a concert band method,  playing  their instrument as a beginner concert band  as well as having one half hour group lesson per week by a specialist teacher on their chosen instrument.

Available instruments may include the trumpet, trombone, flute, clarinet, saxophone as well as some specialist instruments for students who may already have learnt an instrument (drums, bass guitar, guitar percussion etc.) This is a practical course where the students learn to read music by playing the written music. Instruments will be taken home and it is expected that students practise their instruments for homework.

At the completion of the two terms there is an expectation that they would join one of the school's groups.

  • Concert Band ( plays popular music such as movie themes, popular songs)

  • Junior Concert Band ( plays movie favourites such as Forrest Gump)

  • Big Band (entry for this group is by audition. They play jazz ,blues, latin ,funk and in a range of jazz styles)

  • Junior Jazz band /Jazz combo (playing combination of jazz , movie themes and latin music)

  • RockGroups (these groups are formed with friends)
