L2CHEM01

Level 2 Chemistry

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr G. Mueggenburg.

This course consists of three theoretical units covering Atomic Structure, Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry. However, learners will spend about half of the class time doing practical work from a laboratory workbook to become familiar with advanced equipment used at the senior level. All of the first term and part of the third term’s work is internal assessment that builds analytical skills fundamental to continuing with this course. There is an opportunity for learners to extend themselves with an optional research topic of local industry which challenges their understanding. These learners are more likely to obtain endorsements and would be good candidates for the Chemistry Olympiad examination.

There is an optional field trip to Glenbrook Steel Mill towards the end of Term 3 to support understanding of chemistry in society. The cost for this will be advised before the trip occurs. In previous years this cost has been approx. $50.

Recommended Prior Learning

Learners must have satisfactorily completed NCEA level 1.

Course Costs and Equipment (this cost is only indicative)

$68 for Course Workbook, Study Workbook and Education Perfect.
Learners will also need to purchase 2B8 hardcover notebook
Optional field trip to Glenbrook Steel Mill will have an additional cost. This will be advised when trip details are finalised and sent to parents from the Schoolbridge platform. Field trip costs are to be paid via the Kindo app. In previous years this fee was $50.
