Year 10 Science

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs J. Langdon.

This is the third year of Junior Science at Whangaparāoa College. Learners are taught in Science classrooms with access to the laboratory spaces for experimental work. Much of the focus in this year’s work is from Level 5 of the NZ Science Curriculum. This course work is a direct continuation of the year 8 and year 9 Science courses.

Course work for 2025 will include:

- Genetics including inheritance and changes in populations over time

- Forces and Motion

- Electricity and Magnetism

- Musculoskeletal and Respiratory systems

- Chemical Reactions including Ion formation, Balancing Equations and reactions of Acids and Bases

- Carbon Chemistry including ,combustion and it's impacts on the environment


Course Overview

Term 1
- Microbes (carry on from Y9 topic).
- Chemical Reactions including Ion formation, Balancing Equations and reactions of Acids and Bases

Term 2
- Chemical Reactions including Ion formation, Balancing Equations and reactions of Acids and Bases
- Fuels and Climate change

Term 3
- Forces and Motion
- Genetics including inheritance and changes in populations over time

Term 4
- Electricity and Magnetism
- Musculoskeletal and Respiratory systems

Recommended Prior Learning

Ideally WGP College Year 8 and 9 Science

Course Contribution and Equipment (this value is only indicative)

Learners should bring their SciPAD Big Ideas book 2 issued in 2023 for this year’s work. If learners are new to Whangaparāoa College then a new SciPAD will cost $25.
