Year 9 Science
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mrs J. Langdon.
This is the second stage of the Junior Science course at Whangaparaoa College. Learners are taught in Science classrooms with access to the laboratory spaces for experimental work.
Much of the focus in this year’s work is from Level 5 of the NZ Science Curriculum. Course work for 2025 will include:
● Matter and Energy transformation
● Adaptations of plants for Photosynthesis
● Wave systems including anatomy of light and sound sensory organs
● Digestion and Circulatory Systems
● Atomic structure and bonding
● Reactions of Metals
● Shaping of the land (Geological and Hydrological systems)
● Micro-organisms in the Taiao (crosses over into Year 10).

Term 3
● Digestion and Circulatory Systems
● Atomic structure and bonding
● Reactions of Metals
Term 4
● Shaping of the land (Geological and Hydrological systems)
● Micro-organisms in the Taiao (topic may start in Y9 and is completed as first topic in Y10)
Recommended Prior Learning
Ideally WGP College Year 8 Science.
Course Contribution and Equipment (this value is only indicative)
$30 for SciPAD Big Ideas book 2. Learners should bring their SciPAD Big Ideas book 1 for the first half of the year’s work until the Digestion and Circulation topic where they will be given the SciPAD Big Ideas Book 2.
